Summerville SC is located in the southern portion of
Dorchester County. Interstate 26 provides Summerville residents with
convenient access to all areas of Charleston. I-95 cuts through western
Dorchester County near St. George. Summerville, Dorchester County's
largest city, is a blend of some of the most beautiful Victorian
architecture, huge trees laden with Spanish moss, and inviting displays
of colorful flowers carefully tended by Summerville's proud
residents. Summerville was given the name "Flowertown" because of
its spectacular display of azaleas, camellias, and dogwoods each
Spring. Azalea Park is the focal point for the annual Flowertown
Festival.
A popular escape during the Victorian era for plantation owners from
the mosquito laden marshes, Summerville retains much of the charm it
acquired during the romantic period. Beautiful Victorian homes and
manicured lawns and gardens are a signature of the community, along
with antique shops that line the main street. The Summerville area is
also experiencing new residential growth as upscale and starter-home
developments are being built in and around town. Old town village of
Summerville is entered in the National Historic register and has
counted among its summer residents many noteworthy people including
Elizabeth Arden, Ephrem Zimbalist, and Theodore Roosevelt. The
area has over 700 buildings on the National Register of Historic places.
Downtown Summerville shops are a sophisticated blend of unique clothing
boutiques, one-of-a-kind gift shops, antiques and more. More than a
dozen independent restaurants are also located in the downtown area,
which is designated a National Historic District. Visitors have the
opportunity to stay in affordable hotels conveniently located off the
interstate or quaint bed and breakfasts in the heart of the Historic
District. Summerville is also home to South Carolina's only Mobil
Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond Resort. Woodlands Resort and Inn was
heralded the number two Hotel in the Continental US and Canada and
number twenty-seven Worldwide in Travel + Leisure Magazine, 12th Annual
Readers Survey.
If you are looking for Recreation visit Azalea Park. It is a
beautiful 12-acre oasis in the heart of Summerville with peaceful
ponds, paths, fountains and tennis courts. It is the perfect setting to
enjoy a bike ride or a leisurely stroll. And just beyond the historic
downtown district are several excellent golf courses. Gahagan Ball Park
is a wonderful complex for softball/baseball tournaments of all sizes.
