Eight short miles from historic Charleston, Folly Beach,
SC is a 6 and a half mile long natural barrier island destination for
surfers and vacationers. The 6 mile island is home to nearly
1,600 full-time residents and is only a 14 minute ride to Historic
downtown Charleston. Folly Beach South Carolina is known for its
preserved coastal beauty and southern charm.
Some of the many draws for Folly Beach include its
600acre plus beach front county park that has nearly 2,500 feet of
ocean frontage. Morris Island Lighthouse is also a recreational
highlight. The lighthouse was first built to guide ships off the
rocky coast in 1673. In 1775 the lighthouse was extinguished in
order to prevent it from guiding the British ships to shore. The
light house that exist today is 102 feet tall and was rebuilt in
1838. It is a must see attraction. The Folly Beach pier is
also a recreational favorite on the beach for fishing and dining.
The 24 foot wide pier stretches some 1,000 plus feet into the Atlantic
Ocean and offers spectacular views of the beach. If fishing or
checking out the scenery isn’t your thing you may want to visit
the piers full service seafood restaurant.
Besides the normal water activities of parasailing,
water-skiing, surf-fishing and kite boarding Folly beach is also known
for some of the East Coast best Surfing. The “wash
out” on the east end of the island plays host annually to various
surfing tournaments. Not only is Folly beach known for its
daytime activities but it is also known for its night life. The
center of town in Folly Beach has been revitalized and is definitely a
hot spot you don’t want to miss. Some of my favorites
include The Lost Dog, The Surfer Bar, Eleven Center Street and Taco
Boy.
