Awendaw is located northeast of Charleston between Mount Pleasant and
McClellanville off Highway 17. It is approximately 15 minutes
from the beach and less that 30 minutes from historic downtown
Charleston. Since Mount Pleasant is spreading east down
highway 17 Awendaw is the new up and coming area. Awendaw is
minutes from the new Wando High School, East cooper Airport and a
selection of new grocery and retail outlets as well as new banks and an
array of new business that have moved east down highway 17 in
expectation of the new growth. There is a new hospital East
Cooper Saint Francis being built minutes from Awendaw as well as a
brand new state of the art Walmart Super Center.
Awendaw is the place to live if you want to live minutes from the city
but feel like you are hours away. This town is in the Cape
Romain community surrounded by 350,000 acres of The Cape Romain
Wildlife Refuge, the Francis Marion national Forest, and the Santee
Coastal Reserve.
Just off the coast of Awendaw is the longest stretch of protected
coastline on the East Coast- Bulls Island. This 62,000 acre
Cape Romain Wildlife Refuge is great for bird watching, hiking, shell
collecting, dolphin watching and is home to numerous endangered and
threatened species.
Awendaw also has a rich history. It was named after the
Seewee Indian tribe. The town was originally named Seewee
Barony in 1709 and then later renamed Awendaw Barony.
Awendaw is in Charleston County.Charleston County School District is
broken into eight (8) Districts. Together the eight districts educate
approximately 48,500 PK-12 students in 41 Elementary Schools, 14 Middle
Schools, 8 High Schools, 12 Magnet Schools, 4 Charter Schools, and 9
Programs.
